John William “JW” Lehman, 77, of McGehee, AR, passed away July 23, 2010, in Wichita, KS. He was born January 6, 1933, in Gillett, AR, to the late Arnold and Esther Lehman. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Lehman, Son Kerry Lehman of Derby, KS, 2 daughters Theresa McGaha (John) of McGehee and Amy Lehman of League City, TX, 3 sisters, Lila Hughes of Richardson, TX, Fern Cotton of Clifton Park, NY, and Becky Nelson of Weddington, NC, and 3 grandchildren, Shelby and Alex McGaha and Cole Lehman.
JW graduated from UA/Fayetteville. He spent his career with the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service serving as Desha County Agent for 23 years until his retirement in 1995. He spent 2 years in active service in the US Army and 6 years in the National Guard.
JW’s relationship with his savior was evident in his commitment to his church. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was a founding member of redeemer Lutheran Church in Little Rock and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in McGehee.
JW was very active in civic organizations. He was a member and officer of the McGehee Lions Club, Industrial Foundation, and Chamber of Commerce. He worked tirelessly for many years to promote agriculture as President of the Desha County Farm Bureau and was a Master Gardener. He was chosen as the chamber of Commerce’s Man of the year in 1987 and 2008.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, at McGehee First United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Gillett, AR. Visitation will be held at the Griffin Funeral Service of McGehee from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, July 26. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Gillett, AR, McGehee First United Methodist Church, or your Favorite charity.
